This bottling of a 5-year-old Octomore from the 12th series The Impossible Equation is very heavily peated (130.8ppm) and bottled at cask strength. The whisky was matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks and was made from 100% Scottish barley.
Nase: Kräftig, die Nase muss sich für einen Moment an den Alkohol gewöhnen. Dann erst einmal viel Ruß und Asche, etwas alter Schornstein. Anschließend wird der Rauch süßer und leicht fettig, es riecht nach Grill und Speck. Im Hintergrund sind noch etwas Teer und ganz milde Küchenkräuter zu finden. Wirkt erst einmal etwas verschlossen.
Gaumen: Dieser Octomore beginnt süß mit Torfrauch, wirkt dabei recht lebhaft und nimmt schnell an Schärfe zu. Ich finde Apfelschale und leicht unreife Birne, Asche und sehr viel Pfeffer. Dazu kommen Orangenabrieb, Gräser und etwas Ahornsirup, anschließend wird der Pfeffer immer stärker. Zum Ende hin übernehmen eine Gewürzmischung aus Pfeffer, Ingwer und Chili, alle anderen Aromen sind verschwunden.
Abgang: Sehr lang, weiterhin mit einer kräftigen Schärfe, dazu kommen Espresso und Kakaopulver, Fudge und Meersalz. Karamellsauce hält länger an.
